Mathematics – a travel guide

“This book sees itself as a guide to the land of mathematics. It informs, among other things, about the country regions (algebra, geometry, analysis, stochastics,…), about its history, major crises and lines of development, relationships to neighboring regions, culture and practices (modeling, proving, applications, …) and its inhabitants, the Mathematicians. For high school seniors, this book offers a comprehensive orientation about the destination “Mathematics”. […] For future mathematicians, this guide necessarily belongs in their hand luggage.”
Why the German authors of this book chose a (slightly altered version of the) Romania map to illustrate the “Mathematics Country” is a mystery. Maybe because Romania constantly scores well at international Mathematics Olympiads? Maybe.
Either way, now I can confess that I was born not far from Algebra, but lived for quite a while close to the Matrix:
